Think of Tenerife holidays and what springs to mind? Buzzing holiday resorts, sandy beaches and all-night entertainment that carries on well into the early hours? With lively holiday resorts like Playa de las Americas and Los Cristianos in its remit, Tenerife can certainly tick all of those boxes. But there’s much more to this sun-drenched Canary Island than meets the eye, and one of the best ways to experience it for yourself is to hire a car and get out exploring.

In the south of Tenerife, you’ll find plenty of action in its buzzing beach resorts. It’s a popular spot for sun-seekers and party animals alike, and it’s prime cheap holiday territory – so if you’re looking for a holiday deal or a last-minute getaway, this is the place to be. The major resorts in the south are also a great place from which to hire a car. Pick it up at the airport or in the likes of Playa de las Americas or Costa Adeje, and take to the road to discover some of the island’s best-kept secrets.

The main motorway, TF-1, curves around the south coast and all along the east coast of the island, so you can use it to access the network of tiny coastal roads that meander alongside the island’s fabulous waters and craggy cliff tops. Take your time and you’ll soon find a gorgeous bay or a hidden cove that only the locals know about. Or, head north and discover the crashing surf and dramatic scenery of Tenerife’s northern shores, close to the popular resort of Puerto de la Cruz. There are plenty of gorgeous villages and coastal towns around here. It’s less of a cheap holiday destination that the bustling resorts of the south, so if you don’t have the budget for this part of the island, why not drive up there and spend a day exploring it by car instead?

As a popular holiday island, Tenerife is packed with things to see, do and experience. Next time you visit, it’s well worth hiring a car to get out and explore this fascinating place. You’ll soon discover a different side to Tenerife that’s worlds away from what you might be expecting.
