Faces of Oman – Men

Unlike other cultures I encountered, I met many men in Oman, especially in markets. It’s usual to see women in markets in other countries, but in Oman it’s the other way around. In Nizwa, one of the most charming cities we visited, I had a chance to mingle with elderly men from the wet market to the spice market.

But don’t get me wrong, there are markets specifically targeting women. These types of markets sell everything from food to cosmetics, clothes to accessories. Women usually come here for a longer period to chat and shop without being rushed. It’s hard to show what happens in photos because taking photographs of women here is strictly prohibited.

Although it was challenging to take photos of women in Oman, it was a different story with men, especially elderly men. They were surprised by our presence in their neighborhood and allowed us to take photos of their good side. I met an old gentleman fixing his sunglasses before the photo shoot, another friendly man called his friends over for me to take a photo. What an exciting time. While we couldn’t communicate in words, we exchanged lots of laughter.

Oman is a great place for photography. The culture, the colors, the landscape, and the architecture; I got so many great photos during my two weeks with the Oman in Focus trip. I focused on getting great portraits, but it was challenging. I introduced a set of Omani women portraits in an earlier post, and here are portraits of men and boys I met in Old Muscat, Al Hamra, and Nizwa.
