15 June, 2014, my photography exhibition officially opened to the public.
In collaboration with CAD Centre for Arts & Design, we are presenting inspiring stories from around the world through 43 photographs theme “Respect”.
We invited local friends and media to see the art work, and listen the behind the scene stories about each set of photos. I received lots of love and attention from the local community. A lot of them in the crowd were students and young people. The idea of international travel is foreign to many of them, and it was good to see that they got the inspiration they needed.
On the opening night, I got probably one of the most amazing surprise presents from my dear friend Meaghan. She bought a flight ticket from Hong Kong to Kota Kinabalu without telling me to attend my opening! Due to the unfortunate flight delay, Stephen and the gallery staff had to keep me around by telling me ‘special guest of the gallery’ was coming late. My jaw literally dropped when I saw her walking through the glass door. You know I always say you have to have ‘your’ people in your life, and I’m so glad I have Meaghan, and people who care of me enough to (white) lie to me.
It’s a vulnerable moment to show my work to public. I do it every day by working online and publishing articles on RunawayJuno, but it looks a lot more real when it’s on print. It made me question about myself and my work for weeks and weeks. I might disappoint people. They might think this isn’t good enough to be on the gallery. Some would said it’s wrong of me to display my work here because I’m not a local. But if my work and story touch a few individuals and inspire them to make an action in their life, I’m ready to receive the criticism in exchange of the opportunity.
I’ve gotten responses about my exhibition while I was away in Australia for last two weeks. They were happy to see international influences in KK’s art scene. I was very happy to hear that.

19 July, we are inviting everyone to “Meet the Artist”! It’s me, I’m the artist. We’ll have an intimate talk session, where I share my stories about my life and my work, also you’ll have a chance to look mine and other fantastic art exhibitions CAD has. No invitation necessary, just come down to CAD on 19 July. Specific time will be announced soon.
