It’s a grand American tradition, and what better way to see the sights of Florida than from the comfort of your car? A road trip is a great way to pack as much as possible into a Florida holiday with a provider like Florida4Less, so here’s our suggested route that hits most of the biggest destinations – feel free to do it in reverse, or change it around as much as you like to suit your own personal travel goals!
Starting point: Orlando
It’s the tourism capital of Florida, so it makes sense to start your journey here and get all the main attractions out of the way. However, since you’ll probably be pushed for time on a road trip, it’s best to save the bigger theme parks like Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando for another time – maybe a dedicated cheap Orlando holiday with Florida4Less – as you don’t want to spend all day standing in queues.
The best places to head are SeaWorld and the nearby Aquatica, which are usually a bit less congested than their rivals, or alternatively the more relaxed Discovery Cove. After spending your day swimming with dolphins and trekking with turtles, it’s time to head to your next destination…
Miami
Some people might prefer to give Miami a miss, because admittedly the traffic can be a nightmare – so if you’d rather not take the risk, consider heading straight on over to Key Largo. However, you’ll be missing out on one of Florida’s most beautiful cities: make sure you do a bit of shopping at the glamorous South Beach if you stop here! And if you have time, the Miami Museum of Science and Children’s Museum have plenty to keep kids entertained.
If you’re stopping for a while, Miami also has a lot to offer nature enthusiasts, whether it’s the vast (and free-range) Miami Zoo, the talking birds of Parrot Jungle Island or the playful inhabitants of the Monkey Jungle. In nearby Homestead, Coral Castle is one of the USA’s great oddities and definitely worth a visit – a gigantic stone structure created over 28 years by one eccentric sculptor.
Key Largo
The largest island of the Florida Keys, Key Largo is the perfect place to stop and unwind for a while. Alabama Jack’s does great seafood if you’re staying for lunch, or if you’re in the mood for pizza head on to the No Name Pub. Afterwards, dip your toes in the ocean at Sombrero Beach or see the deer at Big Pine Key.
Finish – Key West
After driving through the beautiful Keys – and perhaps planning another holiday staying at villas in Florida here with Florida4Less – you’ll be ready to spend a few days in Key West, where you’ll find plenty to occupy your time. Like Key Largo, it’s a relaxing destination that’s full of great places to eat. If you didn’t get enough of sea life in Orlando, there are over 100 species of fish, turtles and sharks to be seen at the Key West Aquarium.
Or if you’re looking to wind down, you can always join in with a popular local pastime: yoga on the beach. There are plenty of instructors to help you get started, and you might need a bit of a stretch after such a long car journey!
