Market is one of my favorite places to visit when I’m curiously wandering around. It is the most projective about wherever you are.
We can get a sense of the life of common people through things at markets.
First night, many shops were closed but I liked the lively spirits.
The very first item on my list was a guide book. Guide book is somefimes just formailty to say to myself “I’m going ##”, but since I want to get to know Cambodia and Siem Reap, I needed to buy one.
Market was lovely. It looked like just few of same shops over and over from the out side but there’s whole new world once I stepped into the alley.
Delightful smile of ladies, live negotiation between buyers and sellers, talk around the food, numerous typical Cambodian life style and of course shops for souvenirs(. I’m all for souvenirs as I said. )
Tropical fruits got my intention. As a fan of lime but couldn’t get it back home, bought a lime, sliced it and put it in my water can. Bananas, about a half of size of typical banana but twice much sweet. The best was Mango. Cambodian mango is not that yellow, yet mouthful of taste than any other mango I had.
Then I’ve noticed happy people around the market. I don’t know much about life around here, but I can predict this isn’t that easy for them or their family. Yet most of ladies at the market looked genuinely peaceful and happy. Well, I couldn’t just decide ‘happy’ as the right word, but I felt comfort. Eventhough I have no idea what they were talking about, I can sense that they amused themselves.
Moreover….
Seasonings, souvenirs, silk products, cloths, and food! Wow. This little market has a lot to see, and filled with Cambodian life.
Spring roll is one of the best food I had in Siem Reap.
Cambodian silk is elaborately made in silk farm.
I don’t know why but they sell Christmas lights everywhere.
I love Cambodian pants, I should’ve bought it like 5 pieces.
Silver products were really hard to negotiate.
And what else….
During my stay in Siem Reap, market was my routine hangout place. I didn’t buy that much though (I manage myself!!) but I liked feelings around the place.
Now I finish this article with my favorite market photoprahy.
Enjoy!

Beautiful photos! The colors are so vibrant. This brings back the memories of Cambodia for me. Looks like you honed your bargaining skills there– are you haggling for goods in Seoul now?

But It was hard to do it for ladies there. But I got my price! Yay!
Actually Manu, a girl I went with helped me to do it. hehe

After looking at these photos from the market, I might buy “somessing.”

Great pictures! I love visiting markets, though you much braver than me, as I normally feel intimidated and don’t take as many pictures as I would like – but I should start being more like you
Would love to bring home more photos like these.

@Ashley Thanks
I’ve done years and years of snick peak shots. Dvelope a thick skin I think.
It was easier with mechanical camera though. This DSLR makes loud sound of shutter. People usually very generous of being a model when I approached with soft smile.
Or maybe I just met great people around the world!
Great post,
My fave fruits are the ones called (sounds like) ‘shampoo’ in Thailand, not sure what they call them there.
