One of other charm of Jeju is there are many peaks in every corner of island. Those are made with Mt.Hanra, the volcano. Most of the peaks are Oreum, the little volcanoes. However among those hills, there are actual rock mountains time to time. When you look at them, you can remind King Kong movie. Because those mountains are really beautiful, looks like a huge mountain yet it takes just 20 minutes to go on top.
Hike the little peaks around the town is another fun of Jeju.
,
There is Mt.Dan (Dan san) in my hostel’s neighborhood. (Island Guesthouse, which I wrote a review) It was one of two big major scenery. The other one is Songak san, the one I praised in Olle article. This little mountain, Dan san is the one only you can get to know if you are a local or heard from the local. Dan san is a beloved walking course around the town.
.
.
Ailing, the owner of my hostel tells us she could hike up in 12 minutes with her dog. She loves it there, and say lots of great things about it and makes me want to go up there. Moreover, it could be unique experience in this beautiful Jeju island.
.
.
That is how I exactly felt-like I said before, it looks like miniature mountain. It has it all. Peak, rocky part, trees, walking path but not huge as many mountains around.
..
.
.
It took almost 20minutes like expected. Stiff yet not too high. Most of climbing was stiff hill but you can be on the top within a half an hour.
.
.
Perfect for refreshing walking. Besides all the explains, the view! Whoow how can I explain that. We are almost tip of the island so we could see literally the end of the land. Feels like I could see a part of japan or china (I know it’s not the right direction;)
There’s brother island, I saw in a beach near the hostel. South coast of island is just so dynamic! It was cloudy but really clear day.
.
.
.
There is Mt.Songak (Song ak san) where the middle of Olle course 10.
Besides this mountain, Dan san was the tallest among the neighborhood. You can see, everything around it was growing patch, beach, and houses. So you could feel like on the top of the world! Even though you walk up just one kilometer.
.
.
Then, suddenly weather starts to change.Wind is getting stronger, could is getting closer and darker. It was the fastest weather change I’ve ever seen. I was on the top of the mountain, and just watch the cloud moves. It covers the tip of the island and I could hear raining sound, raindrops hitting the ground. On the way, the bottom of the could is just getting loose. How can I say? It was flat, beautiful white and gray flat cloud and since it’s raining hard, I mean hard, and the bottom of cloud is getting un-shaped. Really interesting effect.
.
.
.
So the tip of Mt.Songak has some clouds on. You can see where this air flows, right?
.
.
So half of the island I was facing was raining and cloudy, yet the other side of the island which is the way of Mt.Halla is beautifully shiny. Wow. What a sudden change!
.
.
.
So I want to wait till this cloud passes me. Kind of fear though. This time I actually felt how serious is this natural diseaster and how people are vounerouble to it.
.
As soon as this huge cloud is passing by me, and the mountain, it starts to rain. I mean, it really rain. Raindrops were really big! It hit me on the back of my neck and it hurts so much because I got a bit of sunburn.
Climb down of the mountain just take 10 minutes. Oh yes the power of fear.
And it rain harder. But you know what? It was really refreshing. I don’t remember when did I get this wet. Rain is not always you ‘have to’ avoid. It was certainly refreshing.
So on the way home, about 20 minutes, I didn’t hurry. I enjoy my soaked sneakers, shirts and heavy jean shorts.
It was the most memorable moment of my Jeju trip.
.
Find something to do even lonely planet doesn’t have it, is always awesome.
Hidden, yet pretty ordinary because you ‘knew’ the area.
What do you want to recommend to your traveler friends if they are visited your hometown, or your neighborhood?

Jeju looks beautiful! I love the green, rolling hills. I’d recommend NYC visitors hang out in the East Village and eat at the cheap local restaurants ($6 meals at Thai restaurants, $1 pizza, and more). Also walk around the city and take the subway, instead of taking a tourist bus- you’ll get the ‘real’ New York experience
@Leslie
That’s good idea!
I do have one question. Where is “Broaway” stands? Touristic side? or, local side? I guess half and half?
$1 Pizza sounds amazing. I couldn’t get a real pizza here. Well I can eat real thing in Costco but that’s too much inconvenience. NYC is a big city so I’m sure there are hidden charms of it. Can’t wait to visit!
Like Leslie, I love these hills. I love the mountains and the peace and quiet of the outdoors so this sounds like a fabulous place to visit!
As for the rain, it’s amazing the things we will do when we travel but not at home. We were enjoy walking down a mountain in the rain. At home we drive around the parking lot for 10 minutes at the store so we can get a close spot and don’t get a few drops on us.
I love this post not only for its beauty but that even in rain, nature can teach us something new to enjoy and gives us a different perspective in life.
@Jeremy
Thanks Jeremy!
As I remember, last time I got this soak was in high school because I didn’t have an umbrella. It reminds me of that time.
When we were away from home, we tend to be more generous, don’t you think? Well, I know some people turn to very opposite, like more uptight for where to sleep or something. But many of my travel friends I met was really generous. And I believe that’s the power of traveling around. If you want to except the situation, the culture, the people, you have to open up, right?
Wonderful pictures! When it’s warm outside, I like the rain too – especially that heavy rain you were talking about! When it’s cold I like the rain too – but looking at it from behind a window
It’s a perfect excuse to spend all day inside watching movies
@Sofia
Thanks Sofia
You like rain! I do but it makes me want to play out side more!
) with good movie or good book. mmmm… Wonderful!
But, yes like you said, when it’s raining, under the cover, drink hot tea (Hot drink perhaps?
The weather on this hill reminds me of the weather I encountered in Canada. It was really crazy as there were times we could see it raining on other side of the lake yet it was clear on our side, at least for a moment and then it started raining there too. Beautiful views and pictures from the top of the mountain.
@Ted
Glad have you back!
Yes weather change is so fast and kind of scary too. On the top of the mountain, and that rain was really scary.Yet I have to say, pretty amusing
Wow, the hike would be worth it for a view like that! Nice. Good lesson, though, about being prepared for weather changes when going hiking–it can happen so much faster than you think.
